Do I need a visa to intern in the UK?
Yes — unless you already hold immigration permission that allows work. If you’re enrolled at a UK university, your Student visa typically allows 20 hours/week during term (10 hours below degree level) and full-time during holidays. After graduation, the Graduate Route allows work without a sponsor. If you’re coming to the UK specifically for a short internship, the Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa covers work-experience placements up to 12 months (not 24 — that limit only applies to research and training schemes).
Confirmed 2027 change: From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route drops from 2 years to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. Submit your application by 31 December 2026 to keep the full 2 years. PhD graduates keep 3 years regardless.

Graduate Route — post-study work and internships
The Graduate Route lets international students who complete a UK degree stay in the UK to work or intern without a sponsor. It explicitly permits self-employment, freelancing, internships, and job searching. No job offer is required to apply.
Eligibility
- You have successfully completed a UK bachelor’s, postgraduate, or other eligible qualification.
- You currently hold (or last held) permission as a Student or Tier 4 (General) student.
- You are physically in the UK when you apply.
- Your education provider has a track record of compliance with UK immigration rules.
- You have not previously been granted permission under the Graduate Route or Doctorate Extension Scheme.
- If a government or international scholarship agency paid both your tuition and living costs, you must provide written consent to apply.
Work rights
- Work in any job, at any skill level.
- Look for work without a job offer.
- Internships, freelance work, and self-employment are allowed.
- You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or coach.
- No employer sponsorship is required.
⚠ Confirmed 2027 change: act before 31 December 2026
From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route duration for bachelor’s and master’s graduates drops from 2 years to 18 months. The change depends on your application date, not your course end date.
What this means: If you submit your application on or before 31 December 2026, you receive the full 2 years. If you submit on or after 1 January 2027, you receive the shorter 18-month permission.
PhD graduates keep 3 years regardless of when they apply.

Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa
The GAE visa is for people coming to the UK for short-term work, training, research, or internships through a Home Office-approved exchange scheme. It is a temporary work visa, not a route to settlement.
Correction to a common claim: The maximum GAE stay is not 24 months for all schemes. It is 12 months for work-experience schemes (including internships) and 24 months for research and training schemes. Total continuous GAE permission is capped at 25 months.
Approved GAE sponsors (official list)
| Sponsor / scheme | Type | Max stay |
|---|---|---|
| AIESEC internships | Work experience | 12 months |
| BUNAC — Intern UK | Work experience | 12 months |
| GTI | Work experience | 12 months |
| BAE Systems Training, Intern and Graduate Programme | Research and training | 24 months |
| Chatham House Fellowship | Research and training | 24 months |
| Chevening and Marshall Sherfield Fellowships (sponsor: British Council) | Fellowship | 24 months |

Requirements
- Sponsor must be A-rated.
- Role must be supernumerary and on the eligible-occupation tables.
- National Minimum Wage rules apply. Unpaid internships through GAE must comply with NMW Regulations — see our paid vs unpaid internships guide.
- Maintenance funds of £1,270, or the sponsor can certify maintenance.
- No English language test requirement in the Immigration Rules — the appendix contains no English-language condition. Your sponsor may set their own.
Inside vs outside the UK
Entry clearance from outside the UK is the default. You can switch to GAE from inside the UK only in two cases: (1) you’re already on the GAE route, or (2) you’re a Student who has completed a UK bachelor’s or postgraduate degree and is sponsored for an internship of up to 12 months directly related to that degree.
BUNAC Intern UK — practical conditions
BUNAC sponsors students and recent graduates of all nationalities, rolling year-round. Conditions: full-time degree-level student, or graduated within the last 24 months at the start of the internship; non-UK passport; supernumerary role; host company registered on Companies House for at least 12 months. BUNAC sponsorship can be used at most twice in a lifetime.
Student visa work rights during study
- Degree level and above: up to 20 hours per week during term time.
- Below degree level: up to 10 hours per week during term time.
- Vacation periods: full-time work is permitted during official university vacations.
- Weekly limit calculation: applies to any seven-day period starting on a Monday.
- Term time definition: includes periods when you have scheduled classes, exams, or dissertation work — not just taught sessions.
- Consequences: working more than the permitted hours is a serious immigration offence and can lead to visa curtailment.
Remote work counts toward your hour cap. If you’re physically in the UK and doing remote work or a virtual internship for a non-UK employer, that time still counts toward your 10- or 20-hour weekly limit. Remote ≠ exempt. See our remote internships guide for cross-border scenarios.
An assessed placement that is an integral part of your course can be full-time during term. Optional placements not listed on your CAS still count toward the 20-hour cap.
