Quick answer
Applying for Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) means two applications: one to KHS, and one to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program. The KHS application is an online form with a resume, transcripts, two recommendation letters, three short answers and a 550-word essay. KHS charges no application fee, but Stanford degree programs usually do (KHS).
The 2027-cohort application has closed. It opened on 1 June 2026 and the KHS deadline was 1:00 pm Pacific Time on 6 October 2026 (Knight-Hennessy Scholars). We found no published dates for the next cohort. Check the KHS site before you plan around a date.
Your Stanford program’s deadline is the earlier of its own deadline for KHS applicants or 1 December 2026, so it can differ from the KHS date. Selection then runs through a video statement by invitation, a virtual interview and an Immersion Weekend (KHS evaluation process).
The two applications
| KHS application | Stanford degree program application | |
|---|---|---|
| Submitted to | The KHS online application | Your program’s own admissions system |
| Deadline | 1:00 pm Pacific Time, 6 October 2026 (opened 1 June 2026) | The earlier of your program’s deadline for KHS applicants or 1 December 2026 |
| Fee | No application fee | Usually a fee; KHS cannot provide fee waivers |
| Who decides | The KHS admission committee | The admission committee for your program only |
Both applications are required. KHS defines an eligible application as one submitted to both KHS and your Stanford degree program (KHS media FAQs). The two committees assess you separately and independently, and your program decides on its own timeline, as early as December or as late as April (KHS). Two exceptions exist: scholars already offered and deferred admission to a Stanford program, and first-year Stanford PhD students applying to KHS in their second year (KHS).
How to apply, step by step
- Check eligibility. For the 2027 cohort your first bachelor’s degree must have been earned in January 2020 or later, with other rules for military applicants and current students. See our eligibility guide.
- Choose a full-time Stanford graduate degree program and note its deadline for KHS applicants. Check that it is not on KHS’s list of excluded programs.
- Start both applications early. The KHS form covers background, academic history, work, activities and awards, then the written parts.
- Write the essay and three short answers.
- Ask two recommenders. Their letters are due by the KHS application deadline.
- Submit both applications before their deadlines.
- If invited, record the video statement, complete the interview and attend the Immersion Weekend.
What the KHS application contains
| Part | What KHS asks for |
|---|---|
| Background and history | Personal and academic history, up to six work entries, up to three activities and up to three awards and honours |
| Resume | One page, as a Word or PDF upload. If you have worked for more than a decade you may add a page. Do not include external links, because KHS says it will not review materials outside the application |
| Transcripts | One for each institution attended for a year or longer. Unofficial or official copies are accepted, in English, showing the degree and conferral date. A self-reported template is allowed if you cannot get one |
| Test scores | Only if your graduate program requires them. Self-reported scores are accepted and you do not need to send official scores to KHS |
| Recommendations | Two letters, due by the application deadline |
| Short answers and essay | Three short answers and one 550-word essay (see below) |
| Additional background | Questions on gaps, conduct and prior applications, plus a “One Last Thing” field of up to 750 characters |

The essay and the three short answers
| Part | Prompt (from KHS) | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Essay | Connect the dots. How have the influences in your life shaped you? | 550 words |
| Short answer 1 | Describe your short-term and long-term academic and professional intentions. | 250 words |
| Short answer 2 | Please tell us when you: a) engaged with someone with a different perspective, b) acted with courage, and c) fell short of expectations. | 250 words combined |
| Short answer 3 | Please tell us eight improbable facts (things that are unlikely but true) about you. | 150 words combined |
KHS says there is no right answer, topic or format, and hopes applicants focus more on who they are than on what they have done. Its strongest essays balance self-reflection with the outside influences on the writer’s life and are personal enough that no one else could have written them. For short answer 2, you may use one integrated example or three separate ones. For short answer 3, improbable facts are unexpected traits, experiences, beliefs or skills, not a list of achievements (KHS short answers and essay page).
Our advice (not KHS guidance):
- Open the essay with one specific moment, not your name or a general statement of passion.
- Use one concrete example per answer and say what you learned from it.
- Show the three qualities KHS selects for: independence of thought, purposeful leadership and civic mindset.
- Read each answer aloud. If it could have been written by anyone, make it specific.
Recommendation letters
- You need two letters, due by the application deadline. You can submit your own portion before the letters arrive.
- Recommenders can come from academic, community or professional settings. A peer is acceptable. KHS does not require an academic recommender.
- Do not ask a family member. KHS also lists friends who are not peers as inappropriate, and you may not write, draft, edit, translate or submit your own letter. Recommenders must be the sole authors.
- You may ask the same people who write for your Stanford program, but KHS recommends that they tailor each letter. KHS typically reviews only its own letters.
Source: KHS recommendation letters page. KHS says the strongest letters come from people who have interacted with you closely, extensively and recently. Our advice: ask early, and send each recommender your resume and a short note on what you hope the letter will show.
The video statement
- KHS invites about 500 applicants to submit a required video; up to 180 of them become finalists.
- Invitations go out on a rolling basis throughout January. The video is typically due 5 to 10 days after the invitation arrives.
- The prompt is: “Teach something to your cohort of fellow Knight-Hennessy Scholars.” It can be no longer than two minutes.
- Record it in the online application, with your face on screen. External videos are not accepted.
- An invitation means KHS and/or a Stanford degree program is interested in your candidacy and wants a closer review.
Sources: KHS video statement page and evaluation processes. Finalists are notified on 27 January 2027 for the 2027 cohort.
Interview and Immersion Weekend
- Interview. A virtual individual interview on Zoom in mid-February 2027, lasting up to 25 minutes. A KHS community member facilitates it and it is recorded. The scholar selection committee, not the facilitator, evaluates the recording. Questions are behavioural and tied to the three selection criteria.
- Immersion Weekend. 5 and 6 March 2027. Candidates must be available for the full day on both days, and attendance is required to be selected. It typically includes faculty presentations, group activities, one evaluative group interview and social events.
- Travel. KHS covers travel expenses within university guidelines, including airfare, lodging at Stanford and on-campus meals.
- Decision. Scholars are notified on 16 March 2027.

Mistakes to avoid
- Submitting only one of the two applications. Without both, you are not an eligible applicant.
- Assuming one deadline for both. The KHS deadline is fixed. Your program’s can be earlier or later, up to 1 December.
- Expecting an application fee waiver from KHS. KHS charges no fee, and it cannot waive your program’s fee.
- Putting external links in your resume. KHS says it will not review them.
- Choosing a family member as a recommender. KHS says this is inappropriate.
- Treating the short answers as an afterthought. They are part of the written application, and answer 3 is about improbable facts, not achievements.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to apply to Stanford separately from KHS?
Yes. You must also apply to, be accepted by and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program. KHS evaluates its application separately from your program.
What is the KHS deadline?
For the 2027 cohort it was 1:00 pm Pacific Time on 6 October 2026, and it has passed. Your Stanford program deadline is the earlier of its own deadline for KHS applicants or 1 December 2026.
Is there an application fee?
KHS charges none. Stanford degree programs usually charge a fee, and KHS cannot provide fee waivers.
Do I need the GRE or GMAT?
KHS asks for test scores only if your graduate program requires them. Self-reported scores are accepted, and you do not need to send official scores to KHS.
How many recommendation letters do I need?
Two, due by the application deadline. They can be academic, community or professional, and a peer is acceptable. Family members are not.
Is the video statement required?
Only if you are invited. About 500 applicants are invited, and an invited applicant must submit the video to stay in consideration. It can be no longer than two minutes.
When do I hear the result?
For the 2027 cohort, finalists are notified on 27 January 2027 and scholars on 16 March 2027. Your Stanford program decides on its own timeline, as early as December or as late as April.
When can I apply next?
We found no published dates for the next cohort. This cohort’s application opened on 1 June and closed in early October, so check the KHS site for the next dates.
How we researched this
Last checked: 20 October 2026. We read the KHS pages on applications, the short answers and essay, recommendation letters, the video statement invitation, the evaluation process, the finalist experience and eligibility, and the KHS sample application.
Limits: the sample application is for the previous cohort, so field names and limits may differ in the live form. We found no dates for the next cohort. KHS publishes the Stanford program deadlines for KHS applicants only on each program’s own page, so we give none. KHS pages give the program decision window as December to March in one place and December to April in another. Our advice is labelled as ours.
