Quick answer
Canada has no single GPA scale. Each university sets its own. On the pages we read, the top grade point is 4.0 at the University of Toronto, McGill, Alberta and York, 4.3 at Queen’s, 4.33 at Simon Fraser, and 9 at Victoria. UBC publishes percentage bands and the page we read gives no grade-point scale.
So a 4.0 is not the same everywhere: at Toronto it is the top grade (A+ and A), while at Simon Fraser it is an A and the A+ is 4.33.
We found no official national average GPA, and no official Canada-to-US conversion. Report your GPA as printed, with the scale, and use the method your target programme names.

Grade points for the top letter grades, as printed on each university’s own page. The University of Toronto row comes from its Faculty of Arts & Science statement, so other Toronto faculties may differ. We did not find a Victoria or Alberta page that names the “scale” in the same words, so the “top” column is the highest grade point in the table.

Alberta’s page also shows a nine-point grade next to each letter (A+ and A are both 9 on that page), and its grade points use the 4.0 scale. We found no UBC grade-point table on the page we read. For UBC and other universities not listed, check your own transcript legend. Before 2023, York used a different scheme; we did not confirm its details, so we do not show it.

The same mark can earn a different letter at different universities. The ranges below are from the same pages as the table above (McGill from its 2024–25 calendar and UBC from its “most faculties” grading table).

Worked example: 76%
A final mark of 76% is a B+ at UBC (76–79), a B at Toronto, York and Victoria (73–76), a B at Queen’s (73–76.9, 3.0) and a B+ at McGill (75–79, 3.3). The same mark is a different letter, and at McGill and Queen’s a different grade point, so a GPA from one university cannot be compared with another without checking the scale.
What a 4.0 and the highest GPA mean in Canada
What is a 4.0 in Canada?
At Toronto, Alberta, McGill and York a 4.0 is at or near the top. At Toronto and Alberta both A+ and A are 4.0, and at McGill an A is 4.0 and there is no A+. At York an A+ is 4.0 and an A is 3.9. At Queen’s an A is 4.0 and an A+ is 4.3, and at Simon Fraser an A is 4.00 and an A+ is 4.33.
What is the highest GPA?
It depends on the university: 4.0, 4.3, 4.33 or 9 on the scales we read. Do not treat the maximum from one university as the maximum at another.
4.33 to 4.0 and 9-point to 4-point
We found no official rule for converting between these scales. The tables show that the letter grades line up differently: Simon Fraser’s A is 4.00 and its A+ is 4.33, while Toronto’s A+ and A are both 4.0. Ask the programme you are applying to which method it uses.
Using a Canadian GPA in a US application
- Check your transcript legend for the scale (for example 4.0, 4.3, 4.33 or 9).
- Report your GPA as printed, with the scale, for example “3.80 on a 4.33 scale”.

Is a 4.0 at Simon Fraser the same as a 4.0 at Toronto?
No. At Simon Fraser a 4.00 is an A and the A+ is 4.33. At Toronto A+ and A are both 4.0.
Did York change its scale?
Yes. York’s senate policy sets a new undergraduate scheme effective 1 September 2023, with A+ 4.0, A 3.9 and A− 3.7. We did not confirm the older scheme.
Can I convert my Canadian GPA to a US GPA myself?
There is no official conversion. Report it as printed with the scale unless the programme asks for something else.

Last checked: 28 October 2026. We read the grading pages of the University of Toronto (Faculty of Arts & Science), McGill (2024–25 eCalendar), Queen’s, Alberta, York (senate policy, effective 1 September 2023), Victoria (transcript legend), Simon Fraser (2026 fall calendar) and UBC (students page).
Limits: we read seven universities, not all Canadian institutions. The Toronto figures are from one faculty, McGill’s page is for 2024–25, and the Alberta, Victoria and Toronto pages do not state their own date. We could not open the calculator code and did not confirm York’s earlier scheme, UNBC, or the other Quebec universities. Rules change, so confirm yours with your registrar.
