Quick answer
You apply for a Chevening Scholarship online, through the “apply today” link on your country’s page. The five steps are: register, pass the eligibility checker, save your unique access code, complete every section of the form, then submit. You do not upload any documents when you apply.
You only enter your essays, work and education history, three course choices and two referees’ details. If you are shortlisted, you upload your ID, your undergraduate certificate and two reference letters before the interview.
The 2027/28 round opened in August 2026 and closes in October 2026, with the exact deadline on each country page. Chevening has not published the next round’s dates. Its rules prohibit AI-generated answers, and you confirm you did not use AI on the form.
The five steps in the online application system
Chevening only accepts applications through its online system, and it does not take paper forms. You reach the system from the “apply today” link on your country’s apply page, during the application window (Chevening).

If you cannot recover your code and have to restart, the form resets and takes you back to the eligibility questions. That is only possible while the application window is open and before you have submitted.
What you enter now and what you upload if shortlisted
This is the part applicants most often get wrong. At application stage you fill in form fields only. Documents come later, and only if Chevening invites you to interview.

Chevening’s references page says the interview documents are due at least seven working days before the interview, while its interview page says one week. Treat seven working days as your deadline, because it is the longer period. Missing the reference deadline means your application is no longer considered.
The four essays and the AI rule
The form asks four essay questions, on leadership, relationship-building, your course choices and your career goals. Chevening shows the questions and word limits inside the form, and it recommends drafting in a separate document and pasting in the final text. Our Chevening guide explains what each area tests.
AI is strictly prohibited for generating answers. Chevening says applicants must submit their own original work, that it uses tools to detect fraud, plagiarism and AI-generated content, and that it disqualifies fraudulent or copied applications. The form asks you to confirm that you did not use AI to generate your answers. Chevening’s guidance does not list permitted uses of AI tools, so keep every sentence your own.
The whole form must also be in English. Chevening treats any application you do not complete in English as ineligible, even though it asks for no English test score.
Course choices in the form
You enter three different courses from Chevening’s course finder (course guidance). The form asks whether you have already applied to each one, but you do not need to apply to the universities before you submit to Chevening. If you enter duplicate courses at the same university, Chevening cannot consider your application.
If your course is missing from the system, you can send Chevening a missing course form, which can take up to two weeks to check. If your deadline is close, choose a similar available course. You can change your course choice if you are invited to interview.

After you submit
You cannot change anything after you submit. If you are invited to interview, you can raise changes to personal data with the panel, but not changes to your essays, course choices or work experience. You can withdraw your application at any point, but Chevening cannot reinstate a withdrawn application.

The panel discusses your application and your aspirations, and it asks about your three course choices and the status of your UK university applications. If you lose your access code after you are invited, the system can send a six-digit recovery code to your registered number, which gives you a new code. Can I submit a paper application?
