The highest GPA in Australia is 7.0, which means a High Distinction (HD) in every unit. This applies at universities that use a 7-point GPA scale, such as ANU. A 6.0 average is Distinction level and a 5.0 average is Credit level.
Not every Australian university uses GPA. The University of Sydney and UNSW say they do not use a GPA, and Deakin reports a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) instead.

What Is a Good GPA in Australia?
On a 7-point scale, the middle of each grade band gives an easy way to read your average. A 5.0 or above means your results average at Credit level or better. A 6.0 or above means Distinction level. Entry rules for postgraduate programs are set by each university and program, so check the program you want. For other countries, see what counts as a good GPA worldwide.

The 7-Point GPA Scale
Universities that use a 7-point scale give each grade a number of points. The grade labels are the same everywhere, but the percentage marks behind them are not. Two patterns are common, and the table shows one university from each.

*Fail points differ. Federation University lists 3 points for a marginal fail (40 to 49%) and 1.5 for a fail (0 to 39%). QUT lists 3, 2 or 1 points for its fail bands. Check your own university for the exact value.

GPA vs WAM: Check What Your University Uses
Several large universities report a Weighted Average Mark (WAM), not a GPA. The University of Sydney says it does not use a Grade Point Average. UNSW says it does not use a GPA system. Deakin says it uses a WAM.
A WAM multiplies each unit’s mark by its credit points, adds the results, and divides by the total credit points attempted. A GPA turns each result into grade points first. That is why a 99% and an 85% both count as 7 in a GPA, while a WAM keeps the exact marks. If your transcript shows only a WAM, you cannot read a GPA from it directly. Ask your university whether it can issue a GPA statement, or use an estimate and say so.
How to Calculate Your Australian GPA
Multiply each unit’s grade points by its credit points, add the results, and divide by the total credit points counted. Check your university’s rule on which units count, such as failed, withdrawn or credited units. See also our GPA formula guide.

Calculation: 275.0 ÷ 50.0 = 5.50 GPA, a Credit-to-Distinction average. The same four marks give a WAM of 69.5%: (84 + 74 + 65 + 55) ÷ 4 = 69.5, because the units have equal credit points.
Converting Australian GPA to US GPA (Estimate)
There is no single official conversion. US universities and credential evaluators use their own tables, so your result can differ. The table below uses a simple proportion, US GPA = Australian GPA ÷ 7 × 4, so you can see exactly how each number is reached. Your 5.50 example works out to about 3.14.
