Quick answer
A UK PhD has no grade, percentage or classification. It is assessed on a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination), and the examiners recommend an outcome such as pass, pass with corrections, a repeat viva, resubmission, an MPhil instead, or fail. The university then confirms it (University of Bath examiner guidelines).
Because there is no grade, there is no GPA to convert.
What is assessed
A doctorate is judged against criteria, not marked out of 100. At the University of Bath the thesis must show the ability to design and carry out a research project, make an original and significant contribution to knowledge, show originality of mind and critical judgement, contain material worthy of peer-reviewed publication, be satisfactory in presentation, and show an understanding of the research context. The candidate must also pass a viva voce (Bath). Other universities word these criteria differently, so check yours.
An MPhil is judged on a narrower test: the thesis must show originality of mind and critical judgement in a particular subject (Bath).
The viva voce
Examiners normally comprise one internal and one external examiner. Where no suitable internal examiner exists, a second external can be appointed (UWE; University of Nottingham; Bath). Each examiner writes a preliminary report on the thesis, and Bath asks for these at least seven days before the viva.
At Bath a viva is mandatory once a thesis is submitted. It is closed, so friends and colleagues do not attend. It establishes that the candidate wrote the work and understands the wider field, and the questioning may be intense but should not be aggressive. There are no rules about how long it should take, and it can be held online (Bath). Examiners tell the candidate their recommendation at the end, but it has no authority until the university’s Board confirms it.
Possible outcomes
The list below is the University of Bath’s. Wording and time limits differ between universities.
| Outcome | What it means at Bath |
|---|---|
| Pass | All criteria met; no corrections |
| Pass with minor corrections | Corrections due within 3 months |
| Pass with major corrections | Corrections due within 6 months |
| Fail the viva, pass the thesis | A repeat viva is needed for an overall pass, possibly with corrections |
| Fail with permission to resubmit | A revised thesis within 12 months; a second viva may be held |
| Fail, with MPhil recommended | MPhil with minor corrections (12 weeks) or major corrections, where the programme allows it |
| Fail | No award and no chance to correct or revise |
A revised thesis can then be a pass, a pass with minor corrections, an MPhil recommendation or a fail, and Bath does not permit a third attempt (Bath). Nottingham says re-examinations are normally held within one calendar year (Nottingham). We found no published figure for how often each outcome occurs, so we give none.
Thesis length
There is no national limit. Each university, and sometimes each faculty, sets its own.
| University | Limit in its regulations | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Newcastle (2026/27) | 100,000 words in Humanities and Social Sciences; 80,000 in Science, Agriculture and Engineering | Rules for Form of Theses |
| Cambridge | 80,000 or 60,000 words for the PhD depending on the Degree Committee; limits are set per faculty | Word limits |
What counts towards the limit also varies, such as whether notes and bibliography are included, so read your own regulations. Some universities let you submit published papers inside the thesis: Bath allows an “alternative format” thesis in which papers replace a chapter or part of one, linked by commentary, and it must meet the same criteria (Bath).
PhD, DPhil and other doctorates
A DPhil is Oxford’s name for a PhD (Oxford Mathematics), and Oxford describes it as equivalent to a PhD at most other institutions (Oxford DPhil in Economics).
Professional doctorates have their own structure. At Bath they include a taught phase, the thesis word limit is substantially lower than for a PhD, and the same assessment criteria apply. Bath’s DClinPsy is the exception: it is examined on a portfolio of research work instead of a thesis (Bath).
How long a UK PhD takes
| University | Full-time | Part-time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bristol (PhD) | Minimum 3, maximum 4 years | Minimum 6, maximum 8 years | Period of study |
| Leicester (PhD) | Minimum 3, maximum 4 years | Minimum 6, maximum 8 years | Senate Regulation 9 |
| Loughborough (PhD) | Normally 3 years; some programmes 4 | Normally 6 years; some programmes 8 | Regulation XXVI |
| Loughborough (EngD) | 4 years | 8 years | Regulation XXVI |
| Leicester (EdD) | Part-time only | Minimum 3, maximum 6 years | Senate Regulation 9 |
| Leicester (DClinPsy) | 3 years | — | Senate Regulation 9 |
Funding periods and extensions are set by each university and funder.
Why there is no GPA
The doctoral award is decided by criteria and the outcomes above, with no mark or classification attached (Bath). Some UK doctorates include coursework, for example Oxford’s DPhil in Economics, which begins with coursework (Oxford), but the doctorate itself is not graded. If an application form requires a GPA, write that UK doctorates are not graded if the form allows it, or ask the institution how to complete the field. Our WES evaluation guide explains credential evaluation, and our UK grading system guide covers the graded levels. For other systems, see GPA systems around the world.
Frequently asked questions
Do UK PhDs get a grade or classification?
No. A UK PhD is awarded on the outcome of the thesis and viva voce, with no grade, percentage or classification.
What outcomes can a PhD viva have?
At Bath: pass, pass with minor corrections (3 months), pass with major corrections (6 months), a repeat viva, resubmission within 12 months, an MPhil recommendation, or fail (Bath). Other universities vary.
Can you fail a PhD viva?
Yes. Bath lists fail as an outcome with no opportunity for correction or revision, alongside fail outcomes that allow a repeat viva, resubmission or an MPhil (Bath). We found no published failure rate.
How long is a PhD viva?
There is no fixed length. Bath says there are no rules governing how long a viva should take (Bath).
Is a DPhil the same as a PhD?
Yes. Oxford says a DPhil is its name for a PhD (Oxford Mathematics).
How do I convert a UK PhD to a US GPA?
You cannot, because a UK doctorate has no grade. Ask the institution how to complete a GPA field.
How long is a UK PhD thesis?
It depends on the university. Newcastle sets 100,000 words for Humanities and Social Sciences and 80,000 for Sciences and Engineering, while Cambridge sets 80,000 or 60,000 depending on the faculty.
How long does a UK PhD take?
Commonly three to four years full-time and six to eight years part-time, as at Bristol and Leicester.
How we researched this
Last checked: 17 October 2026. We read the University of Bath’s guidelines for examiners of doctoral degrees (updated August 2026) in full, and examiner guidance from UWE and the University of Nottingham. For thesis length and duration we used the regulations of Newcastle, Cambridge, Bristol, Leicester and Loughborough, and for DPhil two Oxford pages.
Doctoral regulations differ by university and change over time, so confirm yours in your own research degree handbook.
