Quick answer

India has no single national GPA. Most universities report a CGPA, usually out of 10. Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits.

Example: 91 grade points over 12 credits gives a CGPA of 7.58.

For a percentage, the board-level rule is CGPA × 9.5. For a US-style 4.0 figure there is no official formula; CGPA × 0.4 is our simple estimate.

Add each course with its credits and grade. Pick “Custom points” if your university uses grade points that are not in the list.

Add each course with its credits and grade. Use all courses from all semesters for a cumulative CGPA.

Enter credits and a grade for at least one course.

CGPA = total of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits. Letter grades use the 10-point scale the UGC suggests (O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5, P 4, F 0), which is not compulsory, so choose “Custom points” if your university uses other values. The percentage uses the unrounded CGPA and applies only where a ×9.5 rule is accepted; the US figure is our own scale-down estimate, not an official conversion.

The CGPA formula and the steps

CGPA = total grade points ÷ total credits, where each course adds its grade points × its credits to the top line and its credits to the bottom line.

  1. List every course with its credits.
  2. Convert each grade to grade points using your university’s table.
  3. Multiply grade points by credits for each course.
  4. Add up the results and add up the credits.
  5. Divide once: total grade points by total credits.

Do the division once, across all courses. Averaging semester results without weighting them by credits gives a different number whenever semesters carry different credits.

Grade points on the 10-point scale

The University Grants Commission suggests a letter-grade scale from O (outstanding, 10 points) down to F (fail, 0), with P (pass) worth 4. Nuffic, the Dutch organisation for international education, notes that the scale is in use at many institutions but is not compulsory.

Letter grade Meaning Grade points
O Outstanding 10
A+ Excellent 9
A Very good 8
B+ Good 7
B Above average 6
C Average 5
P Pass 4
F Fail 0

The meanings are the usual labels for these letters. Percentage ranges for each letter are set by each university, so we do not show one here. Use the table printed on your own mark sheet.

Worked example

A sample transcript (the numbers are illustrative, not from a real student):

Course Credits Grade Grade points Credits × points
Mathematics 3 A+ 9 27
Physics 3 A 8 24
Chemistry 4 B+ 7 28
English 2 B 6 12
Total 12 91

CGPA = 91 ÷ 12 = 7.58.

Combining two semesters

If semester 1 gave 91 grade points over 12 credits and semester 2 gave 98 over 14 credits, the cumulative CGPA is (91 + 98) ÷ (12 + 14) = 189 ÷ 26 = 7.27.

Failed courses and retakes

Under the formula above, an F scores 0 grade points, and its credits stay in the total. Take Mathematics 3 credits (A+), Physics 3 (A), Chemistry 3 (F) and English 3 (B+):

Course Credits Grade Credits × points
Mathematics 3 A+ 27
Physics 3 A 24
Chemistry 3 F 0
English 3 B+ 21
Total 12 72

CGPA with the F counted: 72 ÷ 12 = 6.00. If the Chemistry credits were left out, it would be 72 ÷ 9 = 8.00.

Whether a failed course is counted, replaced by a retake or averaged with it depends on your university’s examination rules. Check them before you rely on either figure.

Percentage and CGPA

There is no single rule that turns a university percentage into a CGPA. For CBSE school results, the board told the press in 2010 that a CGPA multiplied by 9.5 gives an “indicative percentage” (Tribune). The same article notes that the board did not disclose where 9.5 comes from, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a derivation.

Run backwards, the same rule gives a CGPA from a percentage: 75% ÷ 9.5 = 7.89, and 60% ÷ 9.5 = 6.32. For university marks, use the conversion your university publishes.

CGPA Percentage by ×9.5 US estimate (CGPA × 0.4)
10.0 95% 4.0
9.0 85.5% 3.6
8.0 76% 3.2
7.0 66.5% 2.8
6.0 57% 2.4
5.0 47.5% 2.0

Example: 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. CBSE’s Examination Controller said in December 2023 that the board does not calculate or announce percentages, and that an institution or employer that needs one may work it out (ETV Bharat).

Converting an Indian CGPA to a US GPA

We found no official CGPA-to-GPA formula. US universities and credential evaluators apply their own methods and often start from your original percentage or CGPA.

As a planning estimate only, a straight scale-down from 10 to 4 is CGPA × 0.4, so 8.0 becomes 3.2 and 7.58 becomes 3.03. It is our own arithmetic, and an evaluator may land on a different number. For a quick estimate use our CGPA to GPA converter, and see the WES guide if a formal evaluation is required.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing scales, such as entering 4.0-scale points into a 10-point table.
  • Forgetting credits, so every course counts the same.
  • Averaging semester CGPAs without weighting them by credits.
  • Assuming a fixed grade table. A+ is 9 on the common scale, but your university may use another value.
  • Treating ×9.5 or ×0.4 as official for a university or a US application.

Frequently asked questions

Is there GPA in India?

Most Indian universities report a CGPA, usually out of 10, rather than a 4.0 GPA. The scale and the grade points differ by institution.

What is the full form of GPA and CGPA?

GPA is Grade Point Average, and CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average, the average across all the semesters you have completed.

How do I calculate CGPA in India?

Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. 91 points over 12 credits gives 7.58.

How do I calculate GPA from percentage in India?

There is no single rule for university marks. For CBSE school results, CGPA × 9.5 gives an indicative percentage, so a percentage divided by 9.5 gives a CGPA: 60% is about 6.32. Use your university’s own conversion where it publishes one.

What does a 10 CGPA mean?

On a 10-point scale it means the top grade, 10 points, in every graded course. On the UGC-suggested scale that grade is O.

What is a good CGPA in India?

We found no official benchmark. What counts as good depends on the programme and on the cut-off it publishes.

What is the average GPA in India?

We found no official national average, so any single figure would be a guess.

How do I convert my Indian CGPA to a US GPA?

There is no official formula. CGPA × 0.4 is a simple planning estimate, and US universities or evaluators use their own methods.

Does a failed course lower my CGPA?

Under the formula on this page, yes: an F scores 0 points and its credits stay in the total. Retake and exclusion rules differ by university.

How we researched this

Last checked: 17 October 2026. We read Nuffic’s description of Indian grading, the Tribune’s 2010 report on CBSE’s CGPA multiplier and ETV Bharat’s December 2023 report on CBSE’s statement about percentages, and recomputed every example by hand.

Limits: we could not open the UGC’s own guideline document, so the letter-grade scale rests on Nuffic’s account. The formula is the standard credit-weighted average, not a quotation from one university’s regulation. We found no official CGPA-to-US-GPA conversion, so the 0.4 figure is our own estimate. Your university’s regulations override anything on this page, and they change, so confirm the current version with your examination office.
