Quick answer

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a fully funded postgraduate award at the University of Cambridge for citizens of any country outside the UK. It covers the University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance of £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate, airfare, inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge. The Trust funds around 70 scholarships a year (Gates Cambridge).

For 2027 entry, the early round for US citizens resident in the USA closed on 14 October 2026. Everyone else applies in the later round, with a deadline of 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course (timeline).

Gates Cambridge publishes no applicant numbers or acceptance rate, so we give none.

Eligibility

  • Citizenship: any country outside the United Kingdom (eligibility page).
  • Courses you can apply for: a PhD (full-time or part-time, under a pilot scheme), a full-time MLitt, or a full-time one-year postgraduate course, with some exceptions.
  • Current Cambridge students can apply for a new postgraduate course, for example a PhD after an MPhil. You cannot apply to fund the rest of a course you have already started.

Courses Gates Cambridge does not consider:

  • Any undergraduate degree, including a second BA
  • MASt courses
  • Part-time degrees other than the PhD
  • Professional and non-standard degrees, including the MBA, EMBA, Global EMBA, MFin, Executive Master of Accounting, BusD, PGCE, MBBChir Clinical Studies, the 6-year part-time MD (home students only), the A101 Graduate Course in Medicine, and the Master of Conservation of Easel Painting

The eligibility page we read states no age limit, no minimum grade and no English-language requirement. Cambridge sets its own admission requirements for each course, so check the Course Directory page for yours. The page also does not address second master’s degrees directly, so we make no claim about them.

Source: Gates Cambridge timeline. The Trust says US citizens who are both resident in the United States must apply in October and are not eligible for the later round. US citizens studying or working overseas apply in the later round, and the large majority of applicants use that round. Application documents are due by 11:59pm UK time. Your course’s own date is in the Course Directory.

How to apply

  1. Choose a specific course and College place and submit one combined application through the Graduate Application Portal. It covers admission and funding, including Gates Cambridge.
  2. In the Gates Cambridge sub-section of the funding section, answer the four selection questions. PhD applicants also provide a research proposal if it was not already uploaded with their admission documents. Other applicants need none.
  3. Arrange your references: two academic references for admission, plus one Gates Cambridge reference.
  4. Submit before your round’s deadline. Both academic and Gates referees must submit by the deadline too.

The Gates Cambridge reference must assess how you meet the four criteria. The form asks the referee for a ranking against a group, the size of that group, and a rating of exceptional, strong, not strong or weak. It can be up to 4,000 characters typed in the form or an uploaded letter. The Trust suggests a current or former academic adviser, an employer or a senior member of an organisation where you volunteered, and says not to ask friends or family. An academic referee can write it only if they address the criteria and do not simply provide a third academic reference (Gates Cambridge, how to apply).

The four Gates Cambridge questions

Criterion Question (from the Trust) Limit
Academic excellence Please describe how, through your education and past experiences, you have displayed academic excellence. About 200 words (1,400 characters)
Reasons for choice of course Please explain why you want to study this specific course at the University of Cambridge, and how it will facilitate your future plans. About 200 words (1,400 characters)
Commitment to improving the lives of others Please provide an example, or examples, of how you have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of others, why it matters to you and how it relates to your future plans. About 300 words (2,100 characters)
Capacity for leadership Please provide an example, or examples, of how you have demonstrated a capacity for leadership, such as initiating change or bringing people together, and how this will help you make an impact in the future. About 300 words (2,100 characters)

The Trust says there is no single right answer and to use specific examples (how to apply). Wording above is shortened for questions 2 to 4, so read the full text in the portal.

Our advice (not Trust guidance):

  • Use one concrete example per answer, and say what changed because of what you did.
  • In question 2, name the specific research group, supervisor or resource, not general praise of Cambridge.
  • Brief your Gates referee on the four criteria and share your drafts, so the reference supports your examples.

How selection works

  1. Departmental nomination. Cambridge departments nominate a small number of eligible applicants who meet all four criteria at a very high level. The Trust says a relatively small number of applicants are nominated (how we select).
  2. Interview. All nominated candidates are invited to a 25 to 30 minute interview, in person or virtually. The Trust encourages in-person attendance where possible. Four subject-based panels cover Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.
  3. Decision. Scholars are selected after interview. Unsuccessful applicants do not receive feedback.

The process is needs-blind: you are judged on academic qualifications, commitment and potential, not finances (selection criteria). The four criteria are academic excellence, reasons for choice of course, commitment to improving the lives of others and capacity for leadership.

How competitive is it?

The Trust calls the process “incredibly competitive” but publishes no applicant numbers, nominee numbers or acceptance rate. Figures such as 5,700 applicants or a 1.4% rate circulate on other sites. We found no Trust source for them, so we do not use them.

What the Trust does publish: 2,299 scholarships awarded since 2001, to scholars from 112 countries, and a Class of 2026 of 68 scholars (51 PhD and 17 MPhil) from 25 countries in its April 2026 announcement (Class of 2026). Its February 2026 US announcement named 26 US Scholars-elect and described the full 2026 class as 76 (US scholars). Those class totals do not match each other on the Trust’s own pages, so use the “around 70 a year” figure for planning.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying in the wrong round. US citizens resident in the USA are not eligible for the later round, and the US round has now closed for 2027 entry.
  • Using the wrong course deadline. The International date, 8 December or 6 January, depends on your course.
  • Choosing an ineligible course. Check the exclusion list above, including part-time degrees other than the PhD.
  • Letting the Gates reference become a third academic reference. It must address the four criteria.
  • Generic answers. Each question is about your own experience and Cambridge in particular.
  • Relying on one application. See our fully funded scholarships guide, our list of 100 fully funded scholarships and our scholarship selection guide.

How we researched this

Last checked: 21 October 2026. We read the Gates Cambridge Trust pages on the scholarship, timeline, eligibility, how to apply, selection criteria and how we select, plus its April 2026 Class of 2026 announcement and February 2026 US scholars announcement.

Limits: the Trust publishes no applicant numbers or acceptance rate, and the two 2026 class totals on its pages do not match. We could not verify the Trust’s rules on fieldwork, maternity or paternity funding or hardship funding, so we leave them out. English-language and course-level requirements are set by Cambridge per course. Advice is labelled as ours.
