Quick answer
Singapore has no single GPA scale. NUS and NTU use a 5.0 scale (A+ and A are both 5.0, A- is 4.5). SMU calls its scale a 4-point system, but an A+ is worth 4.3 and an A is 4.0. The polytechnics SP and TP use 4.0 (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5).
The same number means different things at each school: a 4.0 average is the bottom of NUS Honours (Distinction) but above SMU’s Summa Cum Laude threshold of 3.80 (NUS, SMU).

Grade points follow the published tables of NUS and NTU, SMU, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic. Honours bands are shown only where the university publishes them: NUS (NTU publishes the same GPA ranges) and SMU's Latin awards. Modules graded S/U or with no grade point are left out of the GPA. This is a guide, not an official result. SIT, SUSS and the other polytechnics are not included because their official tables were not confirmed. Check your own regulations.

SIT, SUSS and the other polytechnics (NP, NYP, RP) publish their own scales and are not covered here. Check each institution’s regulations rather than assuming it matches a row above.
NUS and NTU: the 5.0 scale
NUS and NTU use the same grade points. NUS calls its average GPA, formerly known as CAP (NUS grade legend). NTU reports a term GPA and a cumulative CGPA (NTU bulletin, NTU grade table).

NTU’s bulletin publishes the same ranges of 4.50–5.00, 4.00–4.49, 3.50–3.99 and 3.00–3.49, then 2.00–2.99 for a pass (NTU bulletin). Some programmes add conditions, so check your handbook.
Graduating, and the S/U option
NUS requires a GPA of at least 2.00 to graduate (NUS School of Computing briefing), and NTU requires a CGPA of at least 2.00 (NTU bulletin). NUS undergraduates admitted from AY2016/17 can S/U up to 32 units in their first year under the Grade-Free Scheme (NUS grade legend), and NTU states that an S or U grade has no effect on CGPA (NTU bulletin).
SMU: a 4-point system with A+ at 4.3
SMU grades courses on what it calls a 4-point system, and its published table gives A+ a grade point of 4.3 and A a 4.0 (SMU visiting student factsheet).

Most SMU courses carry 1.0 credit unit, and half-credit courses carry 0.5, so the weights differ less than at NUS and NTU (SMU factsheet).

Elective exclusion. From 2024/25, up to two elective modules are excluded from your final cGPA automatically, but only if the exclusion improves it. The excluded modules still appear on your transcript (SP handbook).

SP and TP share the same grade points from A down to D. They differ at the bottom: SP has D- and P at 0.5, while TP’s P is 1.0. Ngee Ann, Nanyang and Republic Polytechnic publish their own tables, so use your handbook.

Bands from the NUS and SMU sources above. SP and TP list module grade points, so the last column describes the grade, not an award. A 4.0 on one scale is therefore not a 4.0 on another.
Worked GPA examples
All scales use GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σcredits. The grades below are hypothetical.
Example 1: NUS or NTU semester (5.0 scale)

51.5 ÷ 12 = 4.29, which is inside the 4.00–4.49 band.
Example 2: SMU (A+ = 4.3)
Four 1.0-credit courses graded A+, A-, B+ and B give (4.3 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 14.3 ÷ 4 = 3.58, which falls in the Cum Laude range (3.40–3.59).
Example 3: SP with elective exclusion
This is SP’s own handbook example. A student has 345 grade points over 130 credit units, so cGPA = 345 ÷ 130 = 2.65. Excluding two electives worth 10 and 3 grade points (4 and 3 credit units) gives (345 − 13) ÷ (130 − 7) = 332 ÷ 123 = 2.70 (SP handbook).
Converting to a US or UK GPA
We do not publish a Singapore-to-US or Singapore-to-UK conversion table, because no official source we found backs a fixed formula. A 5.0 scale and a 4.3 scale cannot be compared by dividing or copying numbers. When you apply abroad, use the conversion or evaluation the programme asks for. A-Level and O-Level
A-Level rank points. Universities use the University Admission Score (UAS), not a GPA. Each H2 subject scores A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10, and each H1 subject scores half of that: A = 10, B = 8.75, C = 7.5, D = 6.25, E = 5. The maximum UAS is 70 points from 2026, using your best three H2 content subjects and H1 General Paper. For earlier results the maximum was 90 (Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) JC page and Nanyang JC page).

O-Level grades. G3 subjects use nine grades: A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8 and 9. The last O-Level exams are in 2026, and from 2027 the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) keeps the same G3 grades (SEAB). SEAB awards the certificate for E8 or better in a G3 subject. We found no official mark range for each grade, so none is listed.

What is the highest GPA in Singapore?

Is CAP the same as GPA?
At NUS, yes: GPA was formerly known as CAP (NUS grade legend). NTU uses CGPA.
